How to Know If Your Child Is Ready to Read

    Reading Readiness Signs

There's no magic age when every child is ready to read. However, most children show readiness signs between ages 3 and 6. Here's what to look for.

    Pre-Reading Skills

Your child may be ready to start phonics if they can:

  1. Recognise some letters โ€” They don't need to know all 26, but recognising several letters by sight is a good start.
  2. Hold a book correctly โ€” They understand that books have a front and back, and that we read from left to right.
  3. Rhyme โ€” They can identify or produce rhyming words ("cat, hat, bat").
  4. Hear individual sounds โ€” They can tell you what sound a word starts with.
  5. Show interest โ€” They ask about letters, words, or signs they see around them.

  6. What If They're Not Ready Yet?

That's perfectly fine! Continue reading aloud to them daily. Play sound games, sing songs, and let them explore books at their own pace. Pushing too early can create frustration and negative associations with reading.

    Starting With ReadAide

ReadAide's beginner lessons start with the simplest sounds and words. The tap-to-advance feature means your child controls the pace โ€” there's no pressure to keep up. If a word is tricky, the hint button is always there.

    Every Reader's Journey Is Different

Some children read fluently by age 4; others don't click until age 7. Both are completely normal. What matters most is consistent exposure, positive encouragement, and the right tools.
